It operates across a wide supply range up to 5.5V, has a 3.5µs access time, draws 5mA nominal supply current, and is rated -40°C to 85°C. EEPROM differs from flash in that it can be erased and rewritten at the byte level rather than in blocks, which is why it is preferred for data that changes frequently in small increments. The maximum bus frequency is recorded as 400k Hz, with a 1M Hz figure also listed in the source data.
The CAT24M01WI-GT3 is used to hold small amounts of data that must survive power loss and change often over the life of the product. Typical applications include calibration constants and trim values, device serial numbers and MAC addresses, configuration and user preference settings, run-hour and event counters, and consumable or cartridge authentication data. Byte-level writes make it a better fit than flash where a single parameter is updated repeatedly. Industrial sensors and transmitters, appliances, medical devices, networking hardware, automotive modules and printer or cartridge assemblies all use I2C EEPROM in this role. The two-wire interface consumes only two microcontroller pins, which can be shared with other I2C devices on the same bus.
