The Texas Instruments ISO1050DWR is a galvanically isolated half-duplex CAN bus transceiver combining one driver and one receiver in a 16-pin SOIC package measuring 10.3mm by 7.5mm and 2.65mm high. It supports a data rate of 1 megabit per second with a 74ns propagation delay and 150mV of receiver hysteresis, operating from a 3V to 5.5V supply at a nominal 2mA. The ISO1050DWR covers a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to 105°C and is lead free, gold plated and RoHS compliant.
Galvanic isolation on a CAN interface protects the controller side from ground loops and common-mode transients that build up across long bus runs between cabinets, vehicles or machines. Isolated transceivers are specified in industrial automation and motor drives, building and HVAC control, solar inverters and battery management systems, commercial vehicles and medical equipment where patient or operator isolation is required. The wide-body SOIC package provides the creepage and clearance distance the isolation barrier needs, which is why it is physically larger than a non-isolated transceiver. The -55°C to 105°C range covers outdoor and high-ambient installations.
