Texas Instruments' ADS1220IRVAR is a 24-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter with a 2 ksps sampling rate and an SPI interface, supplied in a 16-pin VQFN measuring 3.5 mm x 3.5 mm x 1 mm. A delta-sigma converter oversamples and digitally filters its input, trading conversion speed for resolution, which is how 24-bit performance is achieved at low power. The device handles both bipolar and unipolar input polarity, runs from a 2.3 V to 5.5 V supply, and dissipates 2.1 mW. The ADS1220IRVAR is rated -40C to +125C, is lead-free and RoHS compliant with gold contact plating, and ships on tape and reel.

Low-speed, high-resolution delta-sigma ADCs are the standard front end for sensor measurement: resistive bridge and load-cell weighing, strain gauges, thermocouple and RTD temperature measurement, pressure and flow transmitters, and battery and current monitoring. Twenty-four bits at 2 ksps resolves microvolt-level sensor output without a high-gain discrete amplifier chain, and 2.1 mW of dissipation suits loop-powered and battery-operated instruments. Bipolar input support allows measurement either side of zero, as a bridge output requires.
