The Texas Instruments ADS1115IRUGR is a 16-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter with four multiplexed input channels feeding a single converter, in a 10-pin X2QFN package measuring 1.5 mm x 2 mm x 0.4 mm. It converts at up to 860 samples per second with 1 LSB integral nonlinearity, supports bipolar inputs, and communicates over I2C. The ADS1115IRUGR operates from a single 2 V to 5.5 V supply, dissipates 900 uW, and is specified from -40 C to 125 C with gold contact plating. Delta-sigma conversion trades sample rate for resolution by oversampling and filtering, which is why this architecture dominates precision low-frequency measurement.
Precision 16-bit I2C ADCs at this sample rate are used for slow, accurate measurement rather than waveform capture: thermocouple and RTD temperature sensing, load cell and strain gauge bridges, pressure and flow transducers, battery voltage and current monitoring, portable and handheld instruments, and adding high-resolution analog inputs to microcontrollers whose internal ADC is only 10-bit or 12-bit. The two-wire I2C interface and 900 uW power draw make it easy to bolt onto an existing low-power design, and four multiplexed channels let one converter serve several sensors.
