The Bosch BMI160 is a six-axis inertial measurement unit that combines a triaxial accelerometer and a triaxial gyroscope in a single 14-pin LGA package measuring 2.5mm by 3mm with an 880um height. An IMU of this type reports linear acceleration on three axes and angular rate on three axes, and fusing the two allows orientation and motion to be tracked without any external reference. The BMI160 operates from a 1.2V to 3.6V supply across a -40C to 85C temperature range and presents an SPI digital output as recorded in the catalog. It is lead-free and RoHS compliant.
Six-axis IMUs such as the BMI160 provide the motion and orientation input behind screen rotation and gesture detection in phones and tablets, step and activity counting in wearables, and image stabilisation in cameras. They are also the core attitude sensor in drones, robot vacuums, small robotics and gimbals, where accelerometer and gyroscope data are fused to hold a platform level. Other common uses are head tracking in AR and VR headsets, controller motion sensing in gaming, and tilt, shock and dead-reckoning functions in asset trackers and telematics units. The 1.2V minimum supply and sub-millimetre profile are what make it viable in battery-powered and space-limited products.
