The Finisar Corporation FTL410QD4C is a QSFP+ multimode fibre optical transceiver supporting the 40GBASE-SR4 interface at a maximum data rate of 41.2 gigabits per second over a reach of 300m. It uses a VCSEL transmitter and a PIN receiver at an 850nm wavelength, terminating in an MPO (MTP12) connector, and operates from a 3.3V supply with digital diagnostics. The FTL410QD4C is compliant with 40G Ethernet, compatible with 10 times Fibre Channel and Infini Band QDR, and is rated -5°C to 85°C.

Short-reach parallel optics carry 40 gigabit links across a data centre on multimode fibre, using four lanes of 10 gigabit in each direction through a single MPO ribbon cable. Modules of this type connect top-of-rack switches to aggregation and spine switches, link storage arrays and server clusters, and provide breakout to four separate 10 gigabit ports when used with a fan-out cable. The 300m reach covers intra-building and campus runs where single-mode optics would be unnecessarily expensive. Data centre operators, network integrators and enterprise IT teams buy these on the open market for capacity expansion and for spares on switch platforms whose vendor-coded optics are costly or no longer stocked.
